4 images of small trees and topiary

It was Zuppa Atelier’s small garden plate (bottom right) that caught my eye this week and I’ve been seeing topiary shapes ever since. I know technically they are small trees but they just reminded me of topiary and my neighbour’s impeccably shaped rose bushes – how do they do that?

We have been toiling away in our garden this week but not a topiary in sight. We now have 3 vegetable garden beds in place – in time for winter . Oh well I can look forward to growing garlic at least.

Seeds and pods :: palette and patterns

flower with colour palette

I’m not sure why I’m thinking of spring since autumn is approaching for us. I have, however, been thinking of seeds and pods this week ever since picking up a gorgeous tree pod when we were on the beach. I guess these thoughts somehow led me to this gorgeous photo Garden: 0919, Day Lilly by Andy Ciordia. My palette was the basis for my patterns this week.

two small print patterns

To be honest I don’t think either of them are very successful but I think they have potential. This was my attempt at a small print and I will probably go back to the drawing board (or should I say Wacom tablet) to tweak them a little. I think they might be better with a reduced palette, what do you think? Maybe 2 colours or 3 at most. You’re welcome to download or tweak them on ColourLovers, they are Sowing Seeds (top) and Floating Pods (bottom).

The weather bureau has predicted rain for February so I thought this was a good wishful thinking colour.

Fabric :: vintage small prints

Collection of small print fabrics

I stumbled across a collection of vintage feedsack clipart that I’d downloaded from Pugly Pixel (which I wanted to link to but couldn’t find it on her site) and I seem to have been pondering small print fabrics ever since.

I first became aware of feedsack fabrics when we moved to Atlanta, which also coincided with the beginning of my love of quilts and quilting. Original feedsacks were so sought after then (and probably now) and it still amazes me that their intended purpose was for packaging goods like flour and grain. They are so petite and can only become apparent on very close inspections. I really love the imperfection of the printing and the unevenness of colour.

I think this might be my next pattern project, I always tend to go for large scale but it might be fun to attempt some small scale patterns. I’ll let you know how I go.

My vintage selection are all from NORDICARTFABRIC Etsy store.

Give me the child until seven…

Boy at 10 months and at 7

and I will show you the man. If you remember I did a similar post when my jolly monkey turned 7. Well the little one turns 7 today and thanks to this Jesuit motto it’s been looming on the horizon like some kind of use by date for me to get all my influence in before he becomes hard coded into the man. I don’t devote any space to my little men on this blog and I do this on purpose but this day, the 7th birthday, is my one exception.

My little one was a very serious baby, he studied us and the world around him like he knew the way of the world and we were clueless. We found ourselves thinking that he’d been here before. He was not a difficult baby, a bad sleeper or any trouble. He’s my cuddly one and still loves to snuggle at any opportunity. Here’s what I know, he’s got an inner sensitivity to his surroundings, he’ll stop to watch ants, pat a cat, give me a cuddle if he thinks I’m feeling sad. He gets excited by my new fabric purchases, he’s aware of changes and he pays compliments. He’s a man of few words and my brother summed it by saying he says so much in expression. The boy has turned into a truly funny kid, with a quick wit and strange sense of humour although he doesn’t laugh out loud very often. The bottom photo is him attempting his cackling witch impersonation because he only had one front tooth. He loves dancing and music.

To me he is somewhat of an enigma and the cyclist’s and my resounding question each week is ‘where did he come from?’. I have such a strange yearning in my core that wants to know what the world holds for him and at the same time I never want him to grow out of his eccentricities, like the random collections (rocks mostly), the way he assembles items on his toy box and his little drawings that appear all over the house. Here’s what I also know, he’s curious, smart and opens doors for women – I think the man will be just fine!

Wish I was here again

Rocky shore, sea shells, king parrot and kangaroos

We’ve just returned from here and it rained but we swam in the sea with giant stingrays passing by, were greeted by lazy kangaroos each morning, fed King Parrots and Crimson Rosellas and even ducks, went exploring the headlands and shell covered bays, rode bikes, ate ice cream, rescued frogs from the swimming pool and had no internet! It was blissful.

Web tip :: a word on web fonts

computer with post it note over the screen

I love web fonts, they have revolutionised what web designers can do with typography in designs. Cufón, Typekit and sIFR have all made our task a little easier and our designs a lot more interesting.

Then there’s Google Webfonts who, at last count, have 436 fonts available for use. They’re easy to implement and your only difficult task is to pick one, or two, or three, or… well maybe you should stop there.

Out doing some competitive analysis browsing today I saw so many sites that have poorly implemented Google Web Fonts.  Shockingly most of these sites are by people who call themselves web designers. So today I want to show you how to avoid their mistake.

By way of example I chose two fonts from Google; Nixie One and Josefin Sans. When browsing fonts on Google Web Fonts you’ll notice under the sample text and next to the font name it will tell you how many styles there are of that font and this is important. Let me start with my 3 Nixie One sentences below… take some time to study them…

  1. This is my gorgeous Nixie One sentence at Normal weight.
  2. This is my Nixie One sentence at Bold weight.
  3. This is my Nixie One sentence at Bolder weight.

Now Nixie One has one style or weight, which is 400 or normal in font speak. So when I use the font as it was intended, in number 1, it looks crisp and clean and dare I say gorgeous. The problem comes when I start adding a weight to the font by making it bold and bolder in my CSS. Can you see it’s slightly blurry or just looks a little strange?

So what’s the fix? I’m glad you asked.

Now let’s ponder my second font, Josefin Sans. This font has 10 styles which translate to varying weights of the font from ultra-light (100) to bold (700) and even accounts for italics. The advantage of using a font like this is I can make use of the varying weights (by their numbers) without the loss of quality. Can you see the difference?

  1. This is my Josefin Sans at 400 so that is normal weight.
  2. This is my Josefin Sans at 600 so that is semi bold weight.
  3. This is my Josefin Sans at 700 so that is bold weight.

The only catch is when using a Google Web Font is make sure you’re telling your stylesheet that you want to use all 10 (or 3 in my example) styles. So you would be linking to it by either
< href=’http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Josefin+Sans:400,700,600′ rel=’stylesheet’ type=’text/css’> in the HEAD of your document or @import url(http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Josefin+Sans:400,700,600); in your stylesheet.

Hope this helps and feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions.

Flickr three :: #D1DA1B :: autumn approaching

When Brandi posed the question what colour are you loving in her Loving :: Emerald Green post this week it was no stretch for me to find an answer. This is the colour I’ve been seeing everywhere and loving at the moment.

At the beginning of this week I spent 2 days in Melbourne with a university client and they’d used it in their new website design it was then I remarked that I’m loving this colour right now, not quite yellow, not quite green. Then an email newsletter from the Gap store and there’s my colour (go have a look at their website right now and you’ll see it) and then yesterday there was some kind of vintage hot rod car thing going on in Canberra and during our trip to Costco I saw 3 cars this colour! Natually I went to ColourLovers to see who owned it and what they’d called it – can you believe it hadn’t been named yet? Now that’s serendipity. So here it is – my autumn approaching. Do you like it?

Akai Premium Theme from Crimson Pear

Screenshot of Akai premium wordpress blog theme

I’m so excited to share with you what I’ve been toiling away at for the last couple of weeks. This is my Akai (means red in Japanese) self-hosted WordPress blog theme that you can purchase over on my Crimson Pear site.

This was such fun to create. I had the Indian inspired block prints and Henna Mehnhi medallions swirling around my head for weeks – I love medallions. It took a while for me to put them to use but this is usually my approach, I almost map it all out in my head first before I sit down in front of Photoshop. I like this approach although I do set myself up for coding challenges when I finally cut it up to CSS. The little flag showing the date was my road block this time, more the date than the flag, and it was also one of the things that wouldn’t play nice in IE9. The other was the hover on the menu.

These colours are so strange for me and they are not at all what I set out to use but this gorgeous photo called Spread your love everywhere you go from Melissa Deakin Photography just seem to guide my design. Doesn’t it make you want to go to the beach?

So for the geeks out there if you’re interested – it’s built as a child theme on the Thematic Theme Framework – which I love to use. The title and tagline are driven by WordPress Site Title and Tagline under General settings with the option to override with a logo image. The comments are styled so people who comment can quickly see when the author replies to one of their comments. It makes use of a lot of CSS3 so things like rounded corners don’t work in IE but degrade gracefully.

Let me know if you see it being used because I would just love to see this on someone’s blog.
